We All Need Someone - August 21

OVERVIEW:

If we understand that wisdom is the path to get from where we are to where we want to be, it is also vital to understand that no one can travel the path alone. Wisdom is a path that must be traveled with others because healthy relationships are a prerequisite to personal progress. Most of us know the power of relationships but don’t think about it very much in our day-to-day life. However, relationships have the power to get us from where we are to where we want to be, so perhaps it is something we should think more.

DISCUSSION QUESTION:

1. How have relationships -- healthy or otherwise -- impacted where you have ended up in life so far?

2. If you are the sum total of your five most influential people in your life, is that a good thing or not?

3. Why do so many seem to wait for others to take initiative rather than pursue healthy relationships themselves?

4. Give examples of how healthy relationships are hard work.

5. What is the best example of a healthy relationship you know? What is the best thing about that relationship?

6. What are some of the characteristics you look for in friendships?

7. Why is it so much easier to settle for surface-level friendships than it is to fight for meaningful ones? Why is it important for Christians to invest more in personal friendships with one another?

8. Do you think most Christians believe that they need other people in order to be the person God wants them to be? Why or why not?

9. Have you ever considered that the most important decisions in your life will not be moral but rather relational? Do you agree or disagree with that statement?

10. In what way do many of us settle for illusions of companionship in life? How are networks of acquaintances different than meaningful authentic relationships?

APPLICATION:

Make a list of the most influential people in your life. Is that list healthy or unhealthy? What needs to change?

Identify some people in front of you and just behind you in life and begin to pursue, build, and maintain healthy relationships with those people.

MEMORIZATION:

Proverbs 13:20 Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.
