Come Home - March 17

DESCRIPTION

Jesus loved stories. He used them all the time to help people better understand who God was and how God saw them. Out of the many stories He told, few are as popular as the story of The Prodigal Son. A story of two brothers, more alike than they knew. Both lost, both seeing and using their father as a means to an end. A story we can all relate to. In this story, Jesus redefines who God is and redefines what it means to be far from God. A story of hope, forgiveness, and love. A story of coming home.

QUESTIONS

1. Which brother do you identify with the most? Why?

2. Were you surprised by the father’s reaction to his younger son’s homecoming, or would you be surprised if you saw a similar story play out in a family you knew? Why or why not?

3. Both brothers hid from the father — one behind rebellion and one behind rule-keeping. Share a moment from your life where you hid from God and how you did that.

4. Why do we often choose rebellion or rule-keeping over a true relationship with Jesus?

5. Jesus is the true elder brother who left home (Heaven) to seek the rebellious younger brother (us). How can we follow his example and encourage one another towards a relationship with Jesus?

6. You — not what you do or don’t do — are most important to Jesus. Does this make you feel secure or uncomfortable? Why?

APPLICATION

Like the brothers in the story, we often choose our own gratification over a relationship with our Heavenly Father. Identify some things you consistently choose over having a relationship with God and talk to God about making a different choice. Remember that God always loves you and always invites you to come home.
