When You’re Afraid You’re Not Doing Enough

Scripture:

“So the men were sent off and went down to Antioch, where they gathered the church together and delivered the letter. The people read it and were glad for its encouraging message. Judas and Silas, who themselves were prophets, said much to encourage and strengthen the believers.” – Acts 15:30–32

Think:

Have you ever wondered if you are doing enough for God?

You miss a few mornings in your Bible. Your prayers feel distracted. You lose your patience with someone you love—again. You look around at people who seem more disciplined, more spiritual, more put together, and quietly wonder, Am I even doing this right?

The believers in Antioch understood that feeling.

They had placed their faith in Jesus, but then others arrived and told them that Jesus was not enough. They needed to follow additional laws before they could truly belong to God. Suddenly, people who had been walking in the freedom of grace were questioning whether they had done enough to be accepted.

Then the letter from Jerusalem arrived.

When it was read aloud, Luke says they were glad because of its encouraging message. Imagine the relief that moved through that room: We really do belong. Jesus really is enough.

We need that same reminder because we are so quick to turn our relationship with God into a performance review. When we are consistent, patient, and serving, we feel close to Him. When we struggle or fall short, we assume He has stepped away.

But God’s love is not given out at the end of a good week.

You are not more saved on the days when you get everything right, and you are not less His on the days when you fall apart. Your place in God’s family rests on what Jesus has done—not on how well you have done today.

That does not make obedience unimportant. It changes the reason we obey. We do not obey so God will finally love us; we obey because, in Christ, He already does. We do not spend our lives trying to earn a place at His table. Jesus has already pulled out the chair and welcomed us to sit down.

Perhaps you need to hear the message more than once: You belong to Jesus. You are held by grace. You do not have to keep proving that He was right to save you.

Application:

Notice where you have been measuring God’s love by your performance. When you feel that you are not doing enough, stop and remember: your confidence is not in how faithfully you have held on to Jesus, but in how faithfully He holds on to you.

Prayer:

Jesus, I am tired of trying to prove that I am worthy of Your love. Help me rest in what You have already done and obey You from a heart that knows it is fully loved. Amen.
