What Are You Still Keeping?

Scripture:

When this became known to the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus, they were all seized with fear, and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honor. Many of those who believed now came and openly confessed what they had done. A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas. In this way the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power. – Acts 19:17–20

Think:

Sometimes the thing you need to surrender is the thing you reach for when life hurts.

You know what it is costing you. You have cried over it, prayed about it, promised yourself you were finished with it. But when the loneliness returns or the pressure builds, you know exactly where to find it.

You want freedom. Yet letting go feels like losing the one thing you have counted on to get through.

In Ephesus, the encounter with the sons of Sceva became widely known. Fear fell on the people, and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in honor. Then Luke tells us that many who had already believed came forward, confessing their practices.

These were people whose faith was now confronting what they had continued to keep.

Those who had practiced magic gathered their books and burned them publicly. They were destroying the material connected with the practices they were leaving behind.

They could no longer retrieve those pages when they felt afraid.

Luke records the value: fifty thousand pieces of silver. They knew these books were worth something. Their surrender was costly, and they went through with it anyway.

Imagine standing there holding something you once trusted to protect you or give you control. Luke does not tell us their private thoughts, but we can imagine the hesitation. Those pages belonged to a life they knew. Letting them burn meant relinquishing something familiar without knowing everything that would come next.

We understand that hesitation.

What will I reach for when I feel overwhelmed? What if I cannot handle the loneliness? What will happen when I stop hiding?

Sometimes we keep a way back because we are afraid Jesus will not be enough to meet us in the ache.

So we ask Him to free us while preserving access to what has held us. We delete the conversation but keep the number. We put the temptation out of sight without putting it out of reach. We confess enough to feel relief while protecting the secret that would make us accountable.

The Ephesians brought their practices into the open and destroyed the books that supported them. Their actions did not buy forgiveness. They expressed their allegiance to Jesus.

They were willing to lose what they could no longer keep faithfully.

There may be something in your life that requires that kind of decision. Something you have invested in, depended on, or defended for years. Its cost does not make it worth keeping. Neither does its familiarity.

Jesus knows why releasing it frightens you. He knows the pain beneath the habit and the fear beneath the need for control. You can bring Him all of that as you obey. You can ask someone trustworthy to help you take the step and stay beside you afterward.

Surrender may leave an ache that needs care. It may begin a long process of healing. But keeping the way back open will not heal you.

What are you still holding that helps you return to the very thing you are asking Jesus to free you from?

Application:

Identify one way you have preserved access to a sinful habit or practice. Remove that access today, and tell a trusted believer what you are surrendering and where you will need support.

Prayer:

Jesus, You know why I am afraid to let this go. Give me courage to bring it into the light and release what keeps drawing me back. Meet me in the ache that follows, and teach me to trust You there. Amen.
