The Mission Field Already Around You

Scripture:

“So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia, and from there they sailed to Cyprus. When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. And they had John to assist them.” – Acts 13:4–5 (ESV)

Think:

There is a moment when the prayer ends, the hands lift from your shoulders, and the calling requires you to move.

Barnabas and Saul had heard the Holy Spirit. The church had prayed over them. But eventually, they had to walk the sixteen miles from Antioch to the port at Seleucia, step onto a ship, and sail toward Cyprus. They did not know every city they would enter, every person they would meet, or every hardship waiting for them. They simply knew the Spirit had sent them—and that was enough to take the next step.

When they stepped off the ship, they entered Salamis, the largest city on Cyprus and one of the island’s busiest commercial ports. Merchants, sailors, travelers, goods, and ideas continually passed through its harbor. This was not an insignificant place hidden from the world. It was a crossroads from which the gospel could travel in every direction. Luke says they preached in the “synagogues”—plural—revealing a significant Jewish community there.

But there is something even more personal here: Cyprus was Barnabas’s home island.

The Holy Spirit began this great missionary journey by sending Barnabas toward familiar soil. He crossed the sea only to arrive near home—but he returned carrying a message that had changed him. The place that helped shape his story would now hear the story of Jesus through him.

Sometimes living sent does not begin somewhere foreign. Sometimes it begins with your own family, your neighborhood, your workplace, and the people whose lives already intersect with yours.

We can become captivated by the thought of doing something significant for God somewhere else while overlooking the mission field already surrounding us. We pray for a greater opportunity while ignoring the person sitting at our table. We imagine crossing oceans but hesitate to cross the street. We wait for a platform while God places a hurting coworker in the office down the hall.

The Holy Spirit may send some people across the world, but He sends every believer into the world directly around them. You do not have to cross an ocean to live sent. You only have to carry Jesus faithfully into the places you already go and among the people you already know.

Application:

Write down the names of three people God has already placed within your reach—someone in your family, neighborhood, or workplace. Ask Him to show you how to carry the love and truth of Jesus into their lives, then take one intentional step toward one of them today.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit, open my eyes to the mission field already surrounding me. Give me courage to carry Jesus into my family, neighborhood, and workplace. Help me stop waiting for somewhere else and live sent right where You have placed me. Amen.
