Don’t Call Them What They Were

Scripture:

“And the voice came to him again a second time, ‘What God has made clean, do not call common.’ This happened three times, and the thing was taken up at once to heaven.” – Acts 10:15–16 (ESV)

Think:

“What God has made clean, do not call common.”

The word translated “common” is koinos—defiled, unacceptable, unfit to come near. It was how Peter had learned to view people like Cornelius. But God was about to bring Peter face-to-face with a Gentile whose heart He had already been preparing.

Peter still saw a category. God saw a man He loved.

We do the same thing. We take someone’s worst moment and make it their permanent name. We call them by the addiction, the divorce, the failure, the prison sentence, the reputation, or the version of them we remember. Long after God begins writing something new, we keep reading from the old chapter.

Sometimes we even do it to ourselves.

Jesus says forgiven, but we still say guilty.
Jesus says restored, but we still say ruined.
Jesus says new, but we still introduce ourselves by what we used to be.

God was not asking Peter to pretend sin did not matter. He was teaching Peter that grace has the final word. What Jesus cleanses through His blood is truly clean. The past may explain where someone has been, but it no longer has the authority to name who they are.

The command came three times because old labels do not loosen easily. Peter needed God to repeat what grace had declared until it became louder than everything he had believed before.

Maybe you need to hear it again too.

You are not the worst thing you have done. You are not the name someone gave you in your most broken season. If you belong to Jesus, your truest name is not guilty, unwanted, or unclean.

You are forgiven. You are wanted. You have been brought near.

Do not keep calling common what cost Jesus His blood to make clean.

What old name are you still carrying—or placing on someone else? Let what Jesus has declared become louder than the past He died to redeem.

Prayer:

Jesus, teach me to believe what Your grace has declared. Help me release every old name and see myself and others through the cleansing power of Your blood. Amen.
