When Obedience Has a Price

Scripture:

“When many days had passed, the Jews plotted to kill him… but his disciples took him by night and let him down through an opening in the wall, lowering him in a basket.” — Acts 9:23–25 (ESV)

Think:

This isn’t how we expect the story to go.

Saul has encountered Jesus. He’s been filled with the Holy Spirit. He’s boldly preaching that Jesus is the Son of God. If we were writing the story, we’d expect revival to break out across Damascus.

Instead, a murder plot begins.

The first consequence of Saul’s obedience isn’t comfort—it’s suffering.

Jesus had already told Ananias, “I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of My name” (Acts 9:16). Those weren’t empty words. They were a promise. From the very beginning, Saul learned that following Christ wasn’t about gaining a safer life; it was about finding a greater one.

The same crowd that once celebrated him now wanted him silenced.

What changed?

Not Saul’s courage.

Not his personality.

His allegiance.

The gospel has always divided hearts. Jesus never promised that everyone would applaud those who follow Him. He promised His presence, His peace, and His purpose—but He also said, “If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you” (John 15:20).

Here’s what amazes me: Saul doesn’t run from Jesus when the pressure comes. He doesn’t soften the message or question his calling. He simply keeps saying yes.

Sometimes we assume hardship means we’ve missed God’s will.

Acts 9 reminds us that sometimes hardship is the evidence we’re walking in it.

The same God who called Saul was also protecting him. Not with a dramatic miracle that stunned the crowds, but with a handful of ordinary disciples, a rope, and a basket.

God’s provision isn’t always spectacular, but it is always sufficient.

If obedience has become costly for you—if you’ve lost relationships, opportunities, comfort, or approval because you’ve chosen to follow Jesus—don’t mistake opposition for God’s absence. The road of discipleship has always carried a cost.

But there has never been a greater reward than walking with Christ.

Application:

Don’t let resistance convince you to retreat. The safest place you’ll ever be is in the center of God’s will—even when it isn’t the easiest place to be. Keep saying yes. He’s still holding the rope.

Prayer:

Jesus, give me the courage to follow You no matter the cost. When obedience becomes difficult, remind me that Your presence is worth more than the approval of this world. Help me keep saying yes. Amen.
