The Ache of the Wait

Scripture:

“There he found a man named Aeneas, bedridden for eight years, who was paralyzed. And Peter said to him, ‘Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you; rise and make your bed.’ And immediately he rose.” — Acts 9:33–34 (ESV)

Think:

Eight years.

Luke could have simply told us Aeneas was paralyzed.

Instead, he tells us how long.

Because time has a way of changing us.

Eight years is long enough for hope to fade.

Long enough to stop expecting anything different.

Long enough to accept disappointment as your new normal.

Can you imagine the countless mornings?

The same ceiling.

The same mat.

The same dependence on others.

The same unanswered questions.

Every day looking almost exactly like the one before it.

Waiting is one of God’s hardest classrooms.

Not because it lasts.

But because of what it whispers.

“Maybe God has forgotten you.”

“Maybe this is all your life will ever be.”

“Maybe nothing is ever going to change.”

The enemy loves the ache of the wait because, if we’re not careful, we’ll start measuring God’s faithfulness by God’s timing.

But God has never been late.

Not once.

For eight years, Aeneas could not see what God was preparing.

Then, on what seemed like another ordinary day, Peter walked into the room.

More importantly…

Jesus had never stopped seeing him.

Notice Peter’s words:

“Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you.”

Peter didn’t say, “God has finally noticed you.”

He didn’t say, “Jesus just remembered you.”

No.

The timing of the miracle was not evidence that Jesus had finally become aware.

It was evidence that Jesus had been sovereign all along.

The wait was never wasted.

Throughout Scripture, God often does His deepest work in the waiting. Abraham waited decades for a son. Joseph waited years in a prison. David waited to become king. Israel waited centuries for the Messiah. Waiting has never meant God is absent. More often, it means God is preparing something that can only be received in His perfect time.

Maybe today you’re carrying the ache of a long wait.

A prayer you’ve prayed for years.

A relationship that still hasn’t healed.

A diagnosis that hasn’t changed.

A child who hasn’t come home.

An empty chair that still hurts.

Hear the hope of this story:

Jesus knows your name.

He knows your story.

And He knows exactly how long you’ve been waiting.

Your wait has never escaped His notice.

Application:

Don’t let the length of your wait determine your view of God’s faithfulness. Keep bringing your heart to Him. The God who saw Aeneas for eight years sees you today, and not one day of your waiting has been outside His loving care.

Prayer:

Father, waiting is hard. Sometimes I grow weary, discouraged, and tempted to believe You’ve forgotten me. Thank You that You see every tear, every prayer, and every day I’ve spent waiting. Help me trust Your heart even when I cannot understand Your timing. Strengthen my faith and remind me that You are always working, even when I cannot yet see it. Amen.
