More Than Amazed
Scripture: Acts 8:9–12 (ESV)
“But when they believed Philip as he preached good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized…” — Acts 8:12
Think:
For years, Simon had captivated Samaria.
People listened to him.
Followed him.
Talked about him.
Luke says they were amazed by him.
But here’s the thing about amazement:
It doesn’t last.
You can be amazed and still be empty.
Amazed and still be lost.
Amazed and still go home carrying the same guilt, fear, loneliness, and brokenness you walked in with.
And that was Samaria.
They had seen impressive things.
But they had not experienced transformation.
Then Philip arrived preaching Jesus.
And notice what changes.
The people are no longer merely amazed.
They believe.
They are baptized.
Their allegiance changes.
Their identity changes.
Their eternity changes.
Because Jesus did what Simon never could.
He didn’t simply capture their attention.
He captured their hearts.
That is one of the great dangers in the Christian life.
It is possible to be impressed by Jesus without surrendering to Him.
To admire Him.
Study Him.
Talk about Him.
Even enjoy being around Christian things.
Yet never truly entrust your life to Him.
The crowds were often amazed by Jesus.
But the disciples left everything to follow Him.
Those are two very different responses.
And honestly, that’s where this passage meets us.
Because our culture is full of things that amaze us.
New trends.
New experiences.
New achievements.
New distractions.
For a moment they capture our attention.
Then we’re left searching again.
What our hearts actually need is not another moment of amazement.
We need a Savior.
The people of Samaria finally discovered what every human heart is looking for.
Not a better performance.
Not a more impressive personality.
Not a temporary escape.
Jesus.
The One who forgives sin.
The One who heals shame.
The One who reconciles us to God.
The One who doesn’t merely amaze us for a moment but changes us forever.
And maybe that’s the question underneath Acts 8:
Have I simply been impressed by Jesus?
Or have I truly surrendered to Him?
Because Jesus didn’t come to be admired from a distance.
He came to make dead hearts alive.
Application:
Think about your relationship with Jesus. Is it built primarily on admiration, knowledge, or familiarity? Or is it marked by trust, surrender, and obedience? Ask God to deepen your love for Christ Himself.
Prayer:
Jesus, I don’t want to merely be impressed by You. I want to know You, trust You, and follow You. Thank You for loving me enough not just to capture my attention, but to transform my life. Draw me closer to You today. Amen.
