Interested but Unchanged
Scripture: Acts 17:19–21
“May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting? You are bringing some strange ideas to our ears, and we would like to know what they mean.” —Acts 17:19–20
Think:
The philosophers brought Paul to the Areopagus, where Athens’s greatest minds gathered to examine new ideas. Luke tells us they spent their time “doing nothing but talking about and listening to the latest ideas.”
They were curious about Jesus.
But curiosity is not the same as surrender.
The Athenians loved anything new—something fresh to analyze, debate, and discuss. Now Paul had arrived with a message they had never heard before, and Jesus became one more subject to consider in a city already crowded with ideas.
I wonder how often we do the same.
We listen to another sermon, begin another Bible study, underline another verse, and whisper, “That was exactly what I needed.” We feel the lump rise in our throat. We wipe away a tear. We sense God speaking directly into the place we have tried so hard to hide.
And then we close our Bible and walk away unchanged.
We mistake feeling convicted for actually surrendering.
We keep asking God to speak, but perhaps He already has.
Forgive them.
Tell the truth.
Release what you cannot control.
End the compromise.
Take the next step.
Come back to Me.
Sometimes we ask God for a new word because the last one cost more than we wanted to give. We keep listening because listening feels safer than obeying. As long as we are still “considering” what Jesus said, we do not have to place the thing we love, fear, or cannot control into His hands.
But Jesus is not trying to take something precious from you. He is trying to free you from the thing that has been quietly taking you from Him.
He did not come merely to make you think differently. He came to make you new. He did not carry a cross so He could become one more meaningful addition to your life. He gave His life because He wanted all of yours—the wounded parts, the wandering parts, and even the stubborn parts that keep asking Him to wait.
How many times has Jesus met you in the same place, whispered the same invitation, and patiently waited for your yes?
You may not need another word from God today.
You may simply need to stop running from the one He has already spoken.
Application:
What has Jesus been asking you to surrender, release, or obey? Do not merely feel something today. Place your yes in the hands of the One who placed His life on the cross for you.
Prayer:
Jesus, forgive me for the times I have cried over Your words but walked away unchanged. You have waited so patiently for my whole heart. Today, I give You the yes I have withheld. Amen.
