The God You Have Been Reaching For

Scripture: Acts 17:22–23

“As I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.” —Acts 17:23

Think:

Imagine worshiping everything and still wondering if you had missed Someone.

Athens was crowded with temples, statues, and altars. The people had named god after god, yet one altar remained unnamed: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.

It was an altar built from fear.

What if there was another god they had failed to honor? What if one more sacrifice was required? What if, after all their worship, it still was not enough?

That stone carried the exhaustion of a city trying to reach a God it did not know.

Paul could have condemned them for their idolatry. Instead, he said, “I walked around and looked carefully.” He saw beyond the statues to the searching hearts behind them. Then he stood beside the altar that exposed their deepest uncertainty and announced:

The God you do not know wants you to know Him.

Maybe you understand that altar more than you realize.

You keep trying to be enough—good enough for God, strong enough for everyone else, useful enough to be needed, successful enough to matter. You carry the quiet fear that if people really knew you, they might leave. And beneath it all is the question you rarely say aloud:

Does God really see me—and if He does, could He still want me?

So you build your own altars. You work harder. Keep smiling. Stay busy. Take care of everyone else. Try to pray more and fail less. Yet nothing completely silences the ache.

But the gospel is not the story of people finally finding their way to God.

It is the story of God coming to find us.

Before the Athenians knew His name, God sent Paul across seas and through suffering to stand in front of their unnamed altar and proclaim it. And before you ever reached for Him, Jesus stepped into your darkness. He carried your sin, your shame, and every reason you believed God would not want you to the cross.

The unknown God made Himself known with nail-scarred hands.

You do not have to wonder whether you have done enough to reach Him. Jesus has already crossed the distance to reach you. The ache in your heart is not proof that He is absent. It may be the place where He is gently whispering, “What you have been searching for is not something more. It is Me.”

You were never unknown to the God you did not yet know.

Application:

What are you asking to make you feel secure, valuable, or loved? Stop trying to satisfy that ache with another achievement, relationship, or carefully managed image. Let it lead you to the God who already knows you completely and still came for you.

Prayer:

Jesus, I am tired of searching for life in things that cannot hold me. Thank You for crossing every distance and carrying every sin so I could know You. Meet me in the ache I cannot name, and remind me that I have never been unknown to You. Amen.
