Jesus Wants You Free

Scripture: Acts 16:16–18

“In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!” — Acts 16:18

Think:

Everyone in Philippi knew what this girl could do.

No one seemed to care what it was doing to her.

Luke tells us she had a “spirit of Python,” language associated with Apollo’s oracle at Delphi. People believed this spirit gave her supernatural knowledge of the future. They paid to hear her predictions, and her owners became wealthy from what held her captive.

What the city celebrated as spiritual power, Jesus saw as spiritual bondage.

For days, she followed Paul and Silas, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved.”

The words were true.

She knew who Paul served. She recognized the gospel he preached. She could tell everyone else where salvation was found—and still be unable to free herself.

There is something painfully personal about that.

You can know the truth and still live tormented by a lie. You can sing about freedom while dragging chains no one else can see. You can tell everyone else that Jesus is enough while secretly depending on approval, control, success, alcohol, pornography, food, anger, or another person just to make it through the day.

You can serve Jesus publicly while suffering privately.

But Jesus did not expose this girl to humiliate her. He confronted what held her in order to free her.

Notice where Paul directed his command. He did not speak against the girl; he spoke to the spirit in her. In the name of Jesus Christ, he commanded it to leave.

Jesus knew the difference between the girl and the darkness that had taken hold of her.

Other people had reduced her to her bondage. Jesus separated her from it.

That shame is not your name. That addiction is not your identity. That fear may have shaped your decisions for years, but it does not own you. What happened to you matters, but it does not have the authority to determine who you will become.

There is a real spiritual enemy, but he is not equal to Jesus. Luke does not describe a long struggle, an elaborate ritual, or a negotiation. Paul spoke one command in the name of Jesus—and “at that moment the spirit left her.”

The darkness that had controlled her could not remain when confronted by the authority of Christ.

Jesus does not merely help you manage what is destroying you. He came to break its claim over your life.

You do not have to keep protecting the very thing Jesus wants to free you from. You can stop pretending. You can bring it into the light. You can ask for help.

Jesus already knows what has been holding you.

And He still wants you free.

Application:

What have you been managing, hiding, or calling part of your personality that is actually keeping you bound? Bring it into the light before Jesus and a trusted believer. Freedom often begins when secrecy ends.

Prayer:

Jesus, I am tired of appearing free while remaining bound inside. Expose every lie I have believed, break what has held me, and teach me to live in the freedom only You can give. Amen.
