What Must I Do?

Scripture: Acts 16:29–34

“He then brought them out and asked, ‘Sirs, what must I do to be saved?’ They replied, ‘Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved.’” — Acts 16:30–31

Think:

The jailer came trembling.

Only moments earlier, he had been prepared to take his own life. Now he fell before Paul and Silas and asked the most important question he would ever ask:

“What must I do to be saved?”

His question reveals how most of us naturally approach God.

Just tell me what to do.

Give me the rules. Tell me how much I need to change, how long I need to feel guilty, or how good I must become. There is something in us that wants salvation to be an achievement—something we can earn, control, and eventually deserve.

But Paul did not tell the jailer to do better.

He told him to believe.

“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved.”

Salvation was not found in what the jailer could do for Jesus. It was found in what Jesus had already done for him.

That is the offense and the beauty of grace: we bring nothing to our salvation except the sin from which we need to be saved. Jesus lived the life we could not live, died the death our sin deserved, and rose again to give us the life we could never earn.

Our part is not to achieve it.

Our part is to receive it.

That can be difficult when you have spent your life proving yourself. You may know Jesus forgives, yet still punish yourself for the past. You may believe in grace, yet secretly measure God’s love by how well you performed today.

But Jesus is not asking you to become worthy of being saved.

He is asking you to trust that He is a worthy Savior.

After the jailer believed, his life began to change. He washed Paul and Silas’s wounds, was baptized, welcomed them into his home, and fed them. He did not do those things to purchase salvation. He did them because salvation had already reached his heart.

Grace came first.

Then change followed.

You do not obey so Jesus will save you. You obey because Jesus has saved you—and a heart that has truly received grace cannot remain untouched by it.

Application:

Where are you still trying to prove yourself to God? Lay down the exhausting work of trying to earn what Jesus freely gives. Believe in the Lord Jesus—and let obedience grow from being loved, not from trying to deserve love.

Prayer:

Jesus, I cannot save myself. Help me stop trusting what I can do and rest completely in what You have done. Let Your grace change me from the inside out. Amen.
