Don’t Waste the Kindness

Scripture: Acts 14:16–18

“Yet he has not left himself without testimony: He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.” – Acts 14:17

Think:

For generations, the people of Lystra had bowed before gods that could not see them, hear them, or save them.

Still, the rain came.

It fell on fields belonging to people who never thanked the living God. Crops pushed through soil while prayers were offered to idols. Families ate until they were satisfied and laughed around tables provided by a God whose name they did not know.

They were worshiping the wrong gods—but the true God had not stopped being kind.

Paul tells them that God had allowed the nations to “go their own way.” That does not mean He approved of the road they had chosen. It means He did not immediately give them the judgment their rebellion deserved. He restrained His wrath, sustained their lives, and placed evidence of His goodness all around them.

Every harvest was both a mercy and a message: Turn around. The God you are searching for is the One already sustaining you.

But they had enjoyed His gifts without recognizing His voice.

That is the unsettling danger of God’s kindness: we can receive so much of it that we begin to mistake His patience for His approval. Because judgment does not fall immediately, we assume our hearts must be fine. Because the rain still comes, the bills are still paid, and laughter still fills the room, we convince ourselves that God is not concerned about the parts of our lives we refuse to surrender.

But God’s kindness is not permission to keep walking away from Him. It is time and space to turn around.

The meals, the friendships, the strength to get through another day—these are not proof that we do not need God. They are proof that we have been living every moment on mercy. We have never taken one breath independently of Him.

The people of Lystra wanted to offer God’s gifts to an idol. Paul begged them to see that the rain, the harvest, and the joy had all come from the living God. His goodness was not meant to make them comfortable in their old lives. It was meant to lead them out.

God has been kinder to you than you know. But His kindness is asking something of you.

Do not merely enjoy the life He gives while withholding the life He wants.

Turn around. Lay down the idol. Come home to the God whose mercy has been keeping you alive long enough to hear His voice.

Application:

Where have you mistaken God’s patience for permission to remain unchanged? Let His kindness move you today: confess what you have excused, surrender what you have withheld, and turn toward the God who has never stopped calling you home.

Prayer:

God, I have received so much from Your hand while withholding parts of my heart. Let Your kindness break through my resistance and lead me to repentance. I do not want to waste the mercy You have given me. Amen.
