Empty Hands

Scripture: Acts 17:24–25

“He is not served by human hands, as if He needed anything. Rather, He Himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else.” – Acts 17:25

Think:

Paul stood beneath the shadow of magnificent temples and told Athens something that shattered everything they believed about worship:

God does not need anything from you.

Their gods depended on people to build their temples, bring their sacrifices, and keep them satisfied. Religion was a transaction: I will give something to you so you will do something for me.

If we are honest, we sometimes approach God the same way.

God, I have served You. I have tried to be faithful. I have prayed, given, forgiven, and kept going when I wanted to quit. Why haven’t You done this one thing for me?

We may never say it aloud, but disappointment exposes the bargain we thought we had made. Somewhere along the way, we began believing that our obedience placed God in our debt.

But God is not an employer paying us for good behavior. He is not fortunate to have us on His team. Before we ever prayed, served, gave, or sacrificed, He was already God—completely glorious, completely sufficient, lacking nothing.

We bring Him nothing He did not first place in our hands.

The strength you use to serve Him came from Him. The money you give was provided by Him. The lungs with which you praise Him are filling right now with breath He supplied.

Everything flows in the opposite direction from what we imagine.

God does not need us to give Him life. He is the One giving life to us.

And yet the God who needed nothing chose to give everything. Jesus said He came “not to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” At the cross, the One who owed us nothing paid the debt we could never repay.

That is grace.

You do not come to God with something to prove or a payment to place in His hands. You come empty-handed—because empty hands are the only hands capable of receiving.

Maybe you are exhausted because you have been trying to earn what Jesus already died to give you. Perhaps you have been serving God while quietly wondering why it still does not feel like enough.

It will never be enough.

That is why Jesus said, “It is finished.”

Application:

Have you been serving God out of love—or trying to make Him owe you something? Open your hands today and stop bargaining. Receive His grace again as the undeserved gift it has always been.

Prayer:

Jesus, forgive me for turning my relationship with You into a transaction. I have nothing to prove and nothing with which to repay You. I come with empty hands, grateful that Your hands were pierced to give me everything I could never earn. Amen.
