They Did Not Recognize Him
Scripture: Acts 13:27–29
“The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus, yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath.” — Acts 13:27
Think:
They did not recognize Him.
They had prayed for the Messiah to come. They had listened as the prophets were read every Sabbath. They knew that God had promised a Savior. Yet when Jesus stood before them, they could not see who He was.
So they condemned the One they had been waiting for.
They believed they were ending His story. But without realizing it, they were standing in the middle of a story God had been writing since before they were born. Even as they rejected Jesus, God was fulfilling His promise to redeem the world through Him.
What they meant for destruction, God was weaving into redemption.
There are moments when our own lives feel impossible to understand. Someone walks away. A prayer remains unanswered. The door we believed God would open slams shut. Something precious is taken from us, and we are left staring at the pieces, wondering how any of it could belong in the story of a faithful God.
In those moments, we see only what has happened to us. We cannot see what God is doing through it.
The people surrounding the cross saw defeat. They saw the end of a movement, the silencing of a voice, and the burial of another body. They could not recognize that God was accomplishing salvation before their eyes. The darkest moment in history was not outside His control. It was being gathered into His plan of redemption.
That does not make the darkness good. Betrayal still wounds. Rejection still aches. Loss still leaves an empty place at the table. But the cross assures us that evil does not get to decide what God can redeem.
You may not recognize what God is doing in your life right now. The chapter may feel cruel, confusing, or painfully unfinished. But your inability to see His hand does not mean His hand is absent.
You are standing inside a story larger than the moment breaking your heart.
And the God who turned a cross into the place of salvation can be trusted with the pieces you cannot yet understand.
Application:
Name the part of your story that makes the least sense right now. Place it into God’s hands—not because the pain is small, but because His redeeming purposes are greater than anything you can presently see.
Prayer:
God, I cannot always recognize what You are doing, especially when my heart is hurting. Help me trust that You are present in the parts of my story I do not understand. Hold what feels broken, unfinished, and beyond repair, and redeem it for Your glory. Amen.
