The Two Words That Opened the World

Scripture:

“Therefore, my friends, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. Through him everyone who believes is set free from every sin, a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses.” – Acts 13:38–39

Think:

For generations, they had lived beneath the weight of a law they could not fully keep.

The law was holy. It showed them the beauty of God and the life He required. But it also became a mirror they could not escape. Every command revealed another place where they had fallen short. Every sacrifice carried the same painful reminder: sin costs something, and someone must die.

Then Paul stood before them and announced two words no one had dared put together before:

Everyone. Everything.

Through Jesus, everyone who believes could be justified from everything the law could never remove.

The cross had reached all the way down into the worst of human guilt. Jesus carried the sins committed in public and the ones buried so deeply no one else knew they existed. He carried the rebellion we chose, the wounds we caused, the years we wasted, and the memories that still make us wish we could go back and become someone different.

He carried everything.

And when Jesus rose from the dead, He did not leave one accusation unanswered in the tomb.

This is more than forgiveness as we often understand it. God does not look at our sin, reluctantly agree to overlook it, and then keep us at a distance. Because of Jesus, the Judge who knew the whole truth about us declares us righteous. The record is cleared. The door is opened. The people who had no defense are invited to come near.

We spend years trying to do for ourselves what only Jesus could do. We replay our failures as though remembering them long enough might somehow pay for them. We punish ourselves because grace feels too easy. We work harder, serve more, hide better, and quietly wonder if God is still disappointed when He looks at us.

But Jesus did not endure the cross so we could spend the rest of our lives trying to finish what He declared finished.

The wounds in His hands are the everlasting proof that our guilt has already been answered.

And then Paul said everyone.

That word reached the Gentile standing at the edge of the synagogue. It traveled beyond Israel, crossed seas and borders, passed through generations, and one day reached us. Someone told us that there was room at the cross even for our story.

Now we must carry that word to those who still believe they are too far gone.

Everything can be forgiven. Everyone can come home.

Including the person you have counted out.

Including you.

Application:

Bring Jesus the sin you keep replaying and the person you have struggled to forgive. Let the cross settle both questions: His grace reaches everything, and His invitation extends to everyone.

Prayer:

Jesus, I am tired of carrying what You already carried. Help me believe that nothing in my story was left outside Your cross. Let Your forgiveness bring me near—and then send me to tell someone else that they can come home too. Amen.
