We All Want To Go Somewhere - August 14

OVERVIEW:

We all have stories about places we have been. Some are great, some are not so great. In addition, we all want to have stories to tell about the places we want to go. That is true in travel and life. In life we all want to go somewhere, but all too often we feel stuck where we are. If we think of the things we all want in life as destinations or places, a natural question arises: how do we get from where we are to where we want to be? The answer may surprise you. Wisdom. Wisdom is the path to get from where we are to where we want to be.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

1. What is one road trip you have had that sticks out in your mind?

2. Name a destination on your travel bucket list. What about somewhere on your spiritual/emotional/physical bucket list? Do you have an example of a destination (of either type) that you've given up on? Why?

3. Do you think that most people think of wisdom as information? Why is it helpful to see wisdom as that which shortens the gap between what we know to do and what we actually do?

4. The reason most people aren’t moving in the direction they want to move is not because of what they don’t know but what they don’t do. Do you agree? If so, why is that the case?

5. Why does a life of wisdom require us to begin with a trust in God? Do you think that most people trust that God is there, that He is good, and that He cares for all and has a plan for all that is always for each person’s good?

6. Discuss the statement, “Insight is better than hindsight every single time.” Talk about what sticks out to you most about it.

7. Have you ever connected wisdom with all of the blessings Solomon describes that come with getting wisdom? Did the sermon give you more of a desire for wisdom?

8. The path you are on today determines the place you will end up tomorrow. How can thinking about life in terms of a journey/path help us envision where we are and where we want to be and how best to get there?

APPLICATION:

When it comes to wisdom, ask for it and act on it.

MEMORIZATION:

Proverbs 4:18–19 (NIV) The path of the righteous is like the morning sun, shining ever brighter till the full light of day. But the way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know what makes them stumble.
