The Gospel Would Not Stay There

Scripture: Acts 13:29–32

“They took him down from the cross and laid him in a tomb. But God raised him from the dead… We tell you the good news.”

Think:

Acts 13 is where the map begins to widen.

The gospel had been proclaimed in Jerusalem, Judea, and Samaria. But Jesus had said it would go farther—to the ends of the earth. So the Holy Spirit set apart Paul and Barnabas, the church laid hands on them, and the message of Jesus began moving beyond the borders of the Jewish world.

Before Luke carries us into those distant places, he stops and tells us what was powerful enough to cross every boundary.

Jesus was crucified. His body was taken down and laid in a tomb. On that cross, He bore the sin of humanity—not the sin of one nation or one kind of person, but the sin of the world. The cross was sufficient for the religious and the rebellious, for those near to God’s promises and those who had never heard His name. There was no sin beyond its reach and no sinner outside its invitation.

The cross covered it all.

Then God raised Jesus from the dead. The resurrection declared that sin’s debt had been paid, death’s authority had been broken, and the promised Savior was alive. This was not news that belonged behind the walls of Jerusalem. A risen King could not be reduced to a regional religion. If Jesus had conquered the grave, then every person, in every place, needed to know.

The resurrection sent the message outward.

Paul and Barnabas crossed seas, entered unfamiliar cities, endured rejection, and risked their lives because they believed this news belonged to everyone. And somewhere along the way, the gospel crossed another border. It moved beyond their world, through generations of faithful witnesses, until one day it reached you.

Someone carried it. Someone crossed a room, opened a Bible, taught a class, preached a sermon, invited you, prayed for you, or refused to stop believing that you needed to hear about Jesus.

You are saved today because the gospel did not stay where it began.

And now it has reached you, but it must not end with you. The same risen Jesus still sends His people beyond what is familiar, comfortable, and convenient. Somewhere within your reach is a person who does not yet know that the cross can cover their sin and the risen Christ can make them alive.

The gospel came all this way to reach us. How could we keep it to ourselves?

Application:

Remember who helped carry the gospel to you. Then ask God to show you the person to whom you must now carry it—and take one intentional step toward them.

Prayer:

Jesus, thank You that Your gospel crossed every distance to reach me. Let it move through my life until someone else knows that Your cross covers them and that You are alive. Amen.
