The Man No One Wanted Saved
Scripture:
“But Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord…” — Acts 9:1 (ESV)
Think:
If you had lived in the first century, there is one name you never wanted to hear.
Saul.
To us, he’s the apostle who wrote much of the New Testament. But in Acts 9, none of that has happened yet. Saul isn’t a preacher. He isn’t a missionary. He’s the church’s greatest enemy.
Luke says Saul was “breathing threats and murder.” This wasn’t simply anger. Violence had become the rhythm of his life. He hunted Christians from city to city. He dragged men and women from their homes. Families were torn apart because of him. Believers were imprisoned because of him. Some lost their lives because of him. Wherever Saul appeared, fear followed.
The church didn’t pray, “Lord, send Saul to our small group.”
They prayed he would never find them.
If anyone looked beyond saving, it was Saul.
Yet before Saul ever started looking for Jesus, Jesus was already pursuing Saul.
That is what makes this chapter so breathtaking.
God did not eliminate His greatest enemy; He transformed him. He did not crush him under judgment; He conquered him with grace. The man who wanted to erase the name of Jesus would soon spend the rest of his life proclaiming it.
This is the scandal of grace.
We tend to divide people into two categories: those who deserve another chance and those who have gone too far. We quietly create a list of people we’ve stopped believing God can reach. Maybe it’s the addict who keeps relapsing. The family member whose heart seems harder every year. The outspoken atheist. The person whose choices have left a trail of destruction.
Or perhaps it’s you.
But Acts 9 reminds us that no one outruns the mercy of God. If Jesus could redeem the man responsible for terrorizing His Church, then no heart is beyond His reach.
The cross is greater than our worst sin.
Grace is stronger than our hardest heart.
And Jesus is still in the business of pursuing people everyone else has given up on.
Application:
Who have you quietly decided is beyond God’s reach? Put their name before the Lord today. Then remember: someone once looked at your life and thought you were too far gone too.
Prayer:
Jesus, thank You for pursuing people who don’t deserve to be pursued. Help me never underestimate the reach of Your grace—not for others and not for myself. Amen.
