Battling Anxiety with the Bible

January 9, 2020 | India Tungate

I’ve sat here and stared at my computer screen trying to think of how to start this blog, and to be honest, I was stumped at first. When it comes to explaining anxiety, it is not that simple. It is something that is often misunderstood, and as someone who has suffered from anxiety for almost all of my life, I’ve always been labeled as “the girl who stresses too much." There is a distinct difference between the sin of anxiety and the mental health disorder of anxiety that is characterized by physical changes in the brain. Anxiety is both a mental health issue and a spiritual issue.

Jesus loves to free His people from their anxieties and fears. He exalts His power and superiority by working to take away what troubles us. Anxiety stems from a lack of faith in our heavenly Father, as unbelief gets the upper hand in our hearts. Much anxiety, Jesus says, comes from little faith.

I have tried every natural way possible to fight the effects of anxiety. I, personally, am not big on medications and going to the doctor only causes more anxiety in myself. So when I start to feel more anxious and unable to get a grip on myself, I have found that taking a moment to open up my Bible and study the word of God truly helps me calm down.

After all of the research I have done on certain supplements or oils or anything possible that is supposed to help with anxiety, I never feel myself heal more than when I simply allow God to take over and to help me battle this mental illness. I’ve always felt alone in this battle, when in reality there has never been a moment that I’ve been by myself. God’s been there the whole time — for all of us.

I was simply standing in my own way. I was standing in the way of letting God help me. I was standing in the way of my faith. And I feel like most of us can relate to that. If you’ve felt that way before, you are not alone! Next time you are feeling an anxiety attack, please take a moment to simply pray and seek healing through God’s word. I promise you it will be a huge help! Have faith in God and in yourself and you can conquer anything!

Here are some of my favorite verses in the Bible that focus on anxiety and have helped me:

“An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up.” - Proverbs 12:25

“I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.” - Psalm 34:4

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." - Philippians 4:6

“For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.” - Isaiah 41:13

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” - John 16:33
